Setting up custom Content Types

How to create a new custom content type, add and reorder its attributes, and edit or delete a content type.

Written by Holly Tyler

Creating a content type

  1. Go to Project settings > Content types.

  2. Click "Create type" in the top right.

  3. Give the content type a name and choose an icon and colour to represent it - this is what appears next to items of this type throughout Content.

  4. Click "Add attribute" to start building out the fields for this type (see below).

  5. Once you're happy, save the content type. It will now appear in your Content types list, and can be applied to items in Content.

Note: the Content types list shows who created each type and when it was last updated, so it's easy to see what's changed and who to ask if you have questions about a type.

Adding attributes to a content type

While creating or editing a content type:

  1. Click "Add attribute".

  2. Search the attribute library that appears - this searches across every attribute that already exists in your project, whether or not it's currently used on another content type.

  3. Select an existing attribute to reuse it, or create a new one if nothing suitable exists yet (see managing attributes for the full list of attribute types and how to configure each one).

  4. Repeat to add as many attributes as the content type needs.

Reusing an existing attribute (rather than creating a near-duplicate) keeps your attribute library tidy and means any item tagged with a type that shares that attribute will show consistent, comparable data.

Reordering, editing and removing attributes

Attributes appear on a content type in the order you add them, and this is the order they'll show on the item's detail panel.

  • To reorder attributes, drag an attribute into its new position within the content type.

  • To edit an attribute (for example to rename it, or change its drop-down options), select it from the content type and update its settings. Because attributes are shared, editing one here will update it everywhere else it's used too.

  • To remove an attribute from a content type, select the remove option next to it. This only removes it from this content type — the attribute itself, and any data already captured against other content types, is not affected.

Editing a content type

  1. From the Content types list, open the three-dot menu next to the type you want to change.

  2. Select "Edit content type".

  3. Update the name, icon, or attributes as needed, then save your changes.

Deleting a content type

  1. From the Content types list, open the three-dot menu next to the type you want to remove.

  2. Select "Delete".

  3. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

Note: deleting a content type does not delete the attributes themselves if they're also used on other content types — only the removed type's link to them, and the values captured against items of that type. Consider whether any items are currently tagged with the content type before deleting it.
